Adopt a Shih Tzu -- Choose Your Puppy

After you've decided to adopt a Shih Tzu and then chosen upon the breeder that has the line of dogs you're looking for, there comes an important decision. Which puppy to adopt? Someone looking to adopt a Shih Tzu pup has many factors to consider as they choose the perfect little darling.

First of all, well-bred, healthy and happy Shih Tzu puppies are outgoing and friendly. They should not have to be begged to come to you, so you can examine them. As you look the pups over at the breeder's, you should look for little ones that are eager to say 'hello' and be your friend. If there is a shy one in the litter, don't pick him out of pity; these types of dogs are better left to a professional owner, as they may have temperament problems.

Second may come the choice of deciding between male and female -- there are definitely advantages to both and the decision should be made with your family or surroundings in mind.

Color is another factor, but don't adopt a Shih Tzu just because of its color. Shih Tzu's are known for changing color over time. For example: a black and white pup with white skin will gain a lighter coat as he ages, developing into a gray and white. A gold colored pup could turn into an orange color.

To show or not to show -- that is the question. When setting out to adopt a Shih Tzu, you must decide if the pup is going to be a companion or a show dog. A pet dog can have almost any markings or colors and still be a wonderful companion to any age. A show dog, on the other hand, may need to be picked for markings and color, as well as other traits. A breeder may be able to give you a recommendation on which pup he sees the most promise in.

There are many things to consider when you adopt a Shih Tzu, but no matter what you decide -- you'll find the Shih Tzu a happy, smart, independent little friend that will steal your heart.
