Shih Tzu Care -- An Ounce of Prevention

Knowing how to properly administer Shih Tzu care is something that both you and your pet will benefit from. Giving suitable Shih Tzu care will lead to a longer, happier, and healthier life for your pet.

There are many Shih Tzu health problems that can be taken care of with the proverbial 'ounce of prevention.' Regular vet check-ups can be monumental in your pet's health, but also there are a few things that can be done right in your own home that will make for a healthier canine friend.

Following is a brief list of Shih Tzu care tips:

Dental Care -- Some small breeds are known to have teeth trouble and so a regular home dental checkup is advisable. If your pup has been trained to accept his mouth being opened and examined, this shouldn't be a problem. Use a small toothbrush and apply a small amount of canine toothpaste, which is available from pet stores or on the internet. Open your Shih Tzu's mouth and use the brush gently and in a downward movement, away from the gums. Also try tartar-control treats to help keep your doggie's teeth clean.

Nails - Check your darling's nails once a week to be sure they don't become overgrown or have any problems. Healthy adult Shih Tzus that get the right amount of exercise rarely need a trim, but pups, older dogs, and dogs that don't get out a lot may require a trimming. Use a pair of guillotine-style clippers. Ask your vet or groomer to show you just how to trim the nails.

Pads - The pads on the bottom of your dog's feet need to be checked everyday for items such as grass seeds or thorns. Also, check between the toes. If paws are muddy, they must be rinsed or the mud can dry in clumps and then rub sores. Keep a careful eye on the hair between the toes also, trimming when necessary.

Ears - Your dog's ears can also pick up grass seeds and such during walks, so they will need to be examined everyday. Look inside the ear on a regular basis. If you notice any change or if your dog shakes his head or paws at his ears, contact your vet, who will be able to treat mites or infection. Long strands of hair often grow at the top of the ear canal and will need to be plucked out; ask a professional how to do this.

Eyes - Every day your Shih Tzu's eyes will need to be bathed. Make a very mild solution with which to wash around your dog's eyes. Use warm water and perhaps add a small pinch of salt or bicarbonate of soda or use a tear-removing lotion. Lightly dampen a cotton pad with some of the solution or lotion and very gently wipe around the eye. Use a fresh pad for the other eye.

Following these tips for regular check-ups should result in a thorough daily Shih Tzu care program for your pet. Wishing you the best as you care for your Shih Tzu!
