Shih Tzu Housebreaking -- Challenge and Triumph
The Shih Tzu breed is most often kept as an inside companion, and so it is that Shih Tzu housebreaking is essential. Housebreaking a Shih Tzu isn't too complicated; two main keys to success are consistency and vigilance.
Consistency
Shih Tzu potty training requires having a routine and sticking to it no matter what. One of the first steps to housetraining your pup will be finding a place in your yard where you want him to relieve himself. Have specific times of the day when you take him to that spot. It is best to take your pup out every two hours, not including before naps, after meals, after play or excitement, as soon as he wakes up, etc. When you take him to his spot, be patient as he finds just the right spot. If after 10 minutes, he still hasn't gone, take him back inside and try again in about half an hour. If you plan to train your pup to relieve himself on command, you will need to say whatever the command you plan to use every time he finishes his business. Give lots of praise and play with your pup a few moments before going back inside.
Vigilance
Shih Tzu housebreaking is something that will take time and watchfulness on your part. Watch your pup closely through the day. If he starts looking for a corner to hide in, starts sniffing the ground, circling, or squatting, you must act quickly to avoid an accident. Clap your hands to startle him (he'll stop what he's doing and look at you) and then encourage him to come outside in a happy, or excited voice. If you can't watch your puppy properly for a certain amount of time, then he should be confined to his crate to avoid accidents.
Remember, even with all your attention trained on your pup, he could still have a few accidents. Be understanding when this happens and never punish your pup for a mishap. He probably won't be able to put two and two together to realize what he's being punished for and will become confused. If you discover that Puppy had an accident, take him outside to his spot for a little while to reinforce that this is where he should be going.
Yes, Shih Tzu housebreaking is a challenge, but there are also great rewards as you watch your Shih Tzu pup learn something new.
