Early Shih Tzu Training -- Learning a Name

The first lesson when you begin Shih Tzu training with your pup is to teach him his name. As we all know, this will become an invaluable tool as you begin obedience training later on. It's important that you come up with your pup's name soon after you bring him home, or else while you're trying to think of a name, he'll become use to "Puppy" and it will be harder to teach his proper name.

When thinking of Shih Tzu puppy names, you might be tempted to call your pup an unusual Tibetan name or some other clever sounding name. This may work, but it's better to have something short and snappy that can be said and understood with ease.

Teaching a pup his name is easy; use it over and over while you are with your pup. During play, grooming sessions, walks, or any other time that you spend with him. However, do not use your puppy's name in conjunction with "come," "sit," or some other command in the early stages. Your pup won't know what this mans anyway and it may only serve to confuse him.

All we're focusing on in this step of early Shih Tzu training is to teaching the pup his name. In time you be ready to move on to the next step in Shih Tzu training, but until then enjoy your darling's puppy days!
