The Shih Tzu Cross - A Hybrid
The Shih Tzu cross is a combination of another breed with the Shih Tzu. Don't think in terms of unintentional crosses, mutts. Think in terms of intentional crosses of two purebred lines. These dogs are hybrids combined to blend the traits of the two breeds.
Hybrid dogs can have any of the characteristics of either of the dog breeds. So expect the unexpected, though some of the hybrids are quite predictable. In some cases health challenges of one breed are reduced by combination with another breed while still maintaining the good characteristics of both breeds.
The Shih Tzu cross is a popular hybrid dog. Certain of the crosses are regulars in pet stores.
Following are some of the crosses seen.
The Zuchon or Shishon is the cross with the Bichon Frise.
The Fo-Tzu is a Toy Fox Terrier cross.
Cross the Shih Tzu with a Westi and you get a Weshi.
A Silky Terrier cross is the Silky Tzu.
Of course the Poodle cross is the Shih-Poo, what else.
The Maltese cross is popular too.
The intentional hybrids are recorded by The American Canine Hybrid Club. They aren't purebreds of course but are recorded as a way to document what they are. You may be interested in seeing and even owning a Shih Tzu cross at some point.
